Since taking office, the Biden-Harris administration has made fighting the maternal mortality crisis a priority. “In the 21st Century, in the United States of America, it should not be the case that women here die in connection with childbirth at a higher rate than women in any other wealthy nation in the world,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in Raleigh last week. Harris said part of the problem was that many Americans have limited access to postpartum healthcare. When she and President Biden took office in 2021, most Medicaid recipients could only receive two months of postpartum care. Harris said she challenged the states to offer 12 months of coverage to patients on Medicaid. “I am proud, North Carolina, to report so far, a total of 45 states have now completed that challenge, including North Carolina,” she said.
