This week was full of star power, with one actor set to teach at UNC Greensboro and another looking to raise money for a local children’s camp. The annual Asheville Quilt Show also takes place this weekend after a year off due to Helene.

As usual, there’s even more good news to be found in our past editions of Good News Friday!

A star-studded semester at UNC Greensboro

It’s time for UNC Greensboro to roll out the red carpet this semester.

Actor David Furr joined the UNCG staff this semester as an Assistant Professor of Acting for the Camera. Furr has received multiple recognitions for his work, including a Tony and SAG Award nomination for portraying Dashiell Montgomery on HBO’s The Gilded Age. He has more than 25 years of professional experience from Broadway, television, film, voiceover work, and more.

Furr will utilize over 15 years of coaching and mentoring experience as he teaches courses on acting for camera and delivering monologues, among other techniques.

NASCAR driver and actor raises money for Victory Junction

In Randleman, NC, another actor is looking to inspire people in a different way.

Frankie Muniz, known for his role in “Malcom in the Middle” and his current work as a NASCAR driver, is hoping to raise $25,000 to send 10 kids to Victory Junction – a year-round camp for children with serious medical conditions. The camp was opened in 2004 after the death of racer Adam Petty, whose family started the program to fulfill his dream of enriching the lives of children with major ailments.

The camp offers ziplining, arts and crafts, and a racecar simulator among other activities that are free of charge to families. Currently, Muniz has raised around $5k, and donations can be made here.

Asheville Quilt Show

For those looking to cozy up as fall approaches, Asheville might have just the event for you.

This weekend, the Asheville Quilt Guild hosts the Quilt Show with over 300 quilts on display. The show also features over 25 vendors, quilts for sale, and live demonstrations by expert quilters. Guests can also see this year’s winners of the Quilt show, who collectively won $12,000 in prize money.

The event began this Thursday and goes until Aug. 16 at the WNC Agricultural Center – Davis Event Center. Tickets can be purchased at the door, with children under 12 admitted for free.
